Ace Hotel Wentworth Ave Oviform Culvert Replacement
Wentworth Ave

Athassel Civil was engaged by Hickory Wentworth Pty Ltd to carry out the demolition and concrete encased GRP replacement works for one of Sydney Water’s oldest oviform drain assets, running 800mm below the proposed basement level. The historic brickwork stormwater channel was built in the 1860’s with the stormwater line entirely below ground and preceding through the site where the brickwork façade is being retained at Wentworth Avenue.

The new channel is constructed from glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) to maintain the obscure oviform shape, encased in reinforced concrete. This was a complex installation, working with the structural steel bracing system to retain the 9-storey heritage façade.

The scope of works included

  • Demolishing and constructing approx 24m of GRP Oviform concrete encased stormwater underneath the existing building.
  • 12m of DN300mm uPVC connection to the existing street stormwater pit
  • CCTV

The complexities of the job included working in around other trades in a tight space in a working demolition site, keeping the stormwater low flow operational while demolishing and constructing the new concrete encased GRP oviform and loading out demolished oviform, redundant pipe and spoil.
